About

Composer and performer of various mediums, Matthew Recio’s evocative compositions generate a vivid imagistic experience for listeners. His collaborations with dancers, artists, writers, and filmmakers offer a full spectrum of auditory and visual sensations.

As an avid vocal composer he was recently named the 2017 American Prize winner in choral writing and was a featured composer with Beth Morrison Projects as an operatic composer at the National Sawdust theatre in Brooklyn, New York. His opera, In Memoriam (with libretto by Molly Korroch) was premiered by the New Voices Opera Company in May 2017. Recio is a two-time winner of the NOTUS Composition Competition, a winner of the Cincinnati Camerata Competition, finalist in the YNYC competition, and a finalist in the Morton Gould Awards and BMI awards. William Stowman's newly released CD, A Timeless Place (Klavier Records Label) features Recio's song cycle Chronology of Storms, with poetry written by Jenna Lanzaro. He is pleased to announce that he is the 2018 Georgina Joshi Prize commission winner, which includes a premiere of a new vocal work with the Indiana University New Music Ensemble in the 2018-2019 season. He was chosen in 2018 to begin his position as the composer in residence at the Luzerne Music Center, one of the leading preparatory orchestral training programs for pre-collegiate musicians.  He is also pleased to announce that he is the first commissioned composer for the Cincinnati Song Initiative 2018-2019 season where we will be writing a cycle for Stephen Carroll and Chelsea Whitaker. He is a published artist with the Dale Warland Series under G. Schirmer/Hal Leonard

"For me, writing is a direct reflection of what I observe in society & the world."

As a composer of instrumental works, Recio has been represented at the Midwest Composer Symposium, the UNK Music Festival, the Hammer and Nail Dance collaboration, and the Double Exposure Film Scoring Initiative. His chamber works received recognition at the IMTA young artist composition competition and the Quartet Nouveau competition. Recio is a composition fellow alumnus for the IMANI Winds Chamber Festival and has written for the Atlantic Music Festival, the Valencia International Performing Arts Program, Yale’s Norfolk Chamber Series and Donald Nally’s Grammy award-winning choir, The Crossing.

A summa cum laude graduate and Charles F. Hockett Scholarship winner of Ithaca College (B.M. Composition and Music Education), Recio is completing his D.M. in music composition at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music where he also completed his M.M. in composition as well. He is a Jacobs Fellowship recipient and associate instructor in music theory. His principal teachers include Dana Wilson, Claude Baker, Aaron Travers, Don Freund, David Dzubay, Eric Ewazen and Sven-David Sandström.
